You look around online and it seems so many people have figured out life and seem so happy. But then, there is you. You feel like your the only one that does not seem to have it together. You give 150% of yourself to each day, but somehow when you lay in bed at night it never seems like its enough.

You search and search, because well, we google everything. And, we actually search like we are talking to a human. Funny right?
Don't worry, we all do it. We start by googling things like, why does it seems like my husband never understands me, or what to do when you have a controlling wife, or how to stop yelling at my kids or even, how is it possible to balance work and home life?
Maybe you even start feeling like you need to do something different and start searching for things like how can a counselor actually help me?, counseling services near me, how do I know if I need marriage counseling, what is the difference between a psychologist and a therapist anyway?, or even, is my mental health normal?
Well, the list goes on and on... as you know. You search and read, and read some more. Perhaps we actually read something that we think may be helpful. So, we put the phone down, go to bed feeling inspired and ready for tomorrow...
Just to wake up and face another day of disappointments, big emotions, letdowns, not feeling heard, and built up frustration. We try to implement what we read but for some reason, it's never as easy as it sounds. So, you get through the day, hop into bed, just to lay there and recall all the ways you were not enough...again. So, we GOOGLE AND REPEAT.
WHY KEEP DOING THE SAME THING ON REPEAT EXPECTING A DIFFERENT RESULT?
JUST IMAGINE, having a fight with your partner and actually feeling like there was resolution.
JUST IMAGINE, on those days you wake up telling yourself you won't lose on it on your kids, you actually succeed.
JUST IMAGINE, walking through the front door after having a really bad day but this time your partner sees your hurt, pain, and struggle.
JUST IMAGINE, being in control of deciding if today is going to be a good day and actually having the power to script that goodness.
JUST IMAGINE, you try something different and actually like the result you get.

At Complete Therapy Associates, we view taking on the role as a spouse as the biggest and most impactful title we will hold. Yet, how many people actually get credentialed to do this job? To hold that title?
Yet, in our culture most of us invest thousands of dollars and hours into hobbies, careers, and other interests. We practice. We commit. And we eventually get better and refine our skills. Being a spouse however, does not seem to get that level of preparation.
Well, why not you ask? Because most of us do not have the skills to know what we are missing. We need to be exposed to the content in order to learn how to do something. Do you know that 2+2 = 4?
YES, because your teacher taught you addition. You were exposed to the content.
Ever meet someone that tells you that they grew up in a family where emotions were communicated, validated, and conflict resolution skills were part of the daily dinner table conversation?
NOT SO MUCH!

"I want you to want to do the dishes!"
Remember this line in the movie, "The Breakup". Jennifer Aniston highlights one very common fight that leads many couples to marriage counseling.
This one statement demonstrates the need for emotional validation from our partners; the problem is... most couples do not know how to talk through a conflict so instead they talk around it. They stick with content over emotion - so in this example: "I want you to want to do the dishes" The wife is likely feeling unappreciated, overwhelmed, and not prioritized by her husband. Instead of telling her husband she feels this way, it's easier to talk about the dishes. The problem becomes that the content often feels like criticism and ignites defensiveness on the receiving side.
We RARELY say what we ACTUALLY mean. WHY?
